Fungal Infection Around Fingernail Area

Mirror of the inner state of you body! This is how nails are called sometimes. The story of your health can be easily read on them. That's why any change in their shape or color, should be an alarm and indicates, most times, serious disorders.

Nails are practically a type of skin, which protects the fingers. They consist of keratin, protein and sulfur, which are present also in hair and skin. Nails grow about 0.5 to 1.2 millimeters a week. They provide many information about a person's health. That’s the why, doctors are attentively examine them. One of their method is to pinch the nail and count the time it gets back to its original color.


Arthritis, diabetes, heart diseases, dermatitis, kidney, liver or lung disorders – they are all reflected in the state of nails. Any change of their color is the sign of fungal infection around fingernail area. Fungi are plant-like organisms, which live inside or on the human body, searching for warm places. That's why nails are perfect.

The humid and warm part of the year is the perfect time for the fingernail fungus to get installed. Germs enter nails through exposed tissues, and the infected nail becomes dry and brittle, and often separates for the nail bed. In most cases, infection appears on only one nail, but it rapidly spreads affecting even the other hand. The nail becomes darker as the germs are killing the keratin. Without a proper treatment the infection may cause pain and attack the entire fingernail area.

Trichophyton rubrum, for instance, affects the skin, while if you got pseudomonas, your nail will have a greenish color. Another disease affecting nails is onycholysis. In this case the nail turns yellow and slowly separates from the nail bed. If you seize black color on your nails, it may indicate infection with the black fungus. Pink or red nails show bad peripheral circulation, while problems with respiratory system have as consequence blue colored nails. Deficiency of B12 is signed by purple or even black colored nails. Half pink, half white nails indicate kidney disease and white small spots are the result of nail bed injuries. Frequent use of nail polish and enamel remover may have as consequence yellowish nails.

There are various ways you can treat fungal infection around fingernail area. Vicks Vaporub-it does not kill the fungus but stops it from spreading. Alcohol, Listerine and Hydrogen Peroxide – any of them is useful. Just pour the solution in a bowl and, for the next 20 minute, soak your nails in it. Do this operation twice a day. The antiseptic ingredients will have rapid results.


Tea Tree and Emu Oil – this are two well known antiseptics. With the help of a cotton stick, apply oil on nails. It stimulates keratin production and regeneration. Apple Cider Vinegar – pour it in a bowl with warm water. Soak your nails in this solution for 20 minutes. Lamisil, cream or tablets, is a medicine with great results in the fight against fungal infection.
