Fingernail Diagnosis

Just as the eyes are the window to the soul, so the nails are the window to the health of the body. Since ancient times, wise men saw great importance in the appearance of the nails and the doctors diagnosed many afflictions by inspecting fingernails. For example, in 400 B.C., the father of medicine, Hippocrates considered that the nails indicate possible illnesses of the human body. Later researches showed that the abnormalities of the nails give important clues to the presence of medical problems or diseases that patients suffer from. Anyone can gather information about fingernails and after taking a good look at them can give a diagnosis of his/her overall health.  For example, the rate of growing of fingernails varies from .004 inches a day or 1/8 of an inch each month. The factors that influence the growing are nutrition and health factors. For example, a nail needs about six months to grow from cuticle to tip.

The aspects that lead in fingernail diagnosis are: the colour, the texture and the surface of nails. For example, the aspect of fingernails provide clues about minor health concerns, such as dermatitis, also known as itchy skin, but also about serious afflictions, such as: heart disease, diabetes, respiratory illnesses, anemia, auto-immune disorders and other chronic diseases.

In order to help you diagnose yourselves after examining your fingernails, we will give some examples about different aspects of nails that indicate ailments. If the nails have a yellow colour , are thick and grow very slow, this means that a person can suffer from serious respiratory afflictions, like: emphysema, chronic bronchitis and other lung diseases. On the other hand, nails that turned to yellow and that have a slight blush at the base are signs of diabetes.  This colour of the nails, yellow, also indicates: fungus, psoriasis, use of tetracycline, or heredity. Red nails might indicate other afflictions, too. If fingernails have red lines at the base of the nail fold this signals lupus or a connective tissue disease. However, a person that has red nail beds suffers from heart diseases and one who has red or deep pink nail beds can suffer from poor peripheral circulation. If the nails are blue, this is a sign that the blood does not receive enough oxygen and this leads to the following fingernails diagnosis: respiratory disorders, cardiovascular problems, or lupus erythermatosus. White, crumbly and soft nails indicate a fungus infection. Fingernails which are half white/ half pink are signs for fungal infection or even for kidney disease. On the other hand, small white patches on fingernails proof that the nail matrix has been injured. The colour purple or black of the fingernails usually results from trauma, but it can also be a clue that the organism has a deficiency of B12 vitamin. Other clues that lead to fingernail diagnosis are brown or black streaks that begin at the base of the nail and continue to the nail tip. These signs indicate a potentially dangerous melanoma. But the lack of colour in fingernails is not a good health indicator. This may indicate anemia.

Grooves in nails are not good signs. A horizontal groove in fingernails indicates: uncontrolled diabetes, circulatory ailments, malnutrition or a severe high fever. However, only one horizontal line may be due to a fingernail trauma or injury.

Clubbed nails are also a sign of illness. For example, the tips of fingernails which extend around fingertip or become inverted indicate afflictions as: anemia, liver or inflammatory bowel disease, or lung ailments
