There are four main types of fake nails:
Gel nails – are made of a special gel which is practically brushed onto the natural nail, then is exposed to ultraviolet light. There are also “no light” gels, can be fixed up by by brushing or spraying an activator on the nails or just by soaking your fingers in the water. They can be used on the entire nail, or you can just fix a split nail. For bests results, a professional should apply them. Gel nails look natural, but they are not so strong and lasting as the acrylic ones. Sometimes they can't be easily removed, causing damages to your natural nails.
Acrylic nails – maybe the most popular type of fake nails, can be used over the entire nail or only on its tip. A mixture is applied on the nails with the help of an acrylic brush. It hardens in a few minutes. Acrylic nails are strong and last long, but their look is not that natural. Before them, the press-on nails were in trend.
Wrap nails – thin and small pieces of silk, linen or fiberglass, cut in a desired shape an applied on the natural nail. This kind of artificial nails are the less durable, but they look very natural.
Sculptured nails – applied on the real nail with the help of an acrylic or fiberglass gel. In order to obtain the desired shape, then are sculpted over a metal. They have natural look, but must be filled form time to time in order to keep that look.
In spite of the fact that fake nails look sometimes much better than natural ones, they require serious maintenance. Let well trained professionals do their job and avoid getting bacterial or fungal infections. The tools must be safe and sanitized, and be aware that some material used applying the nails can cause allergies.
