Discolored Fingernails

Discolored fingernails are no good signs regarding your health. Yellow, white, purple, dark red or greenish colored nails indicate various infections, in 50% with fungi, from soil, air or dust. The most common is Trichophyton rubrum and affects especially the skin and is also known under the name dermatophyte. The nails turn to greenish color are infected with pseudomonas. Black or red nails are consequences of hematoma after a trauma.



Onycholysis is another disease that affects nails, characterized by separation of the nail from nail bed and yellow color. White nails are often signs of anemia. Doctors think that colored fingernails can also be associated with thyroid severe disorders. Nails become black when infected with the so called black fungus. Pink or red nails are signs of poor peripheral circulation. Respiratory problems cause sometimes blue colored nails. Half pink, half white nails show kidney disease and white small spots are signs of nail bed injuries. Deficiency of B12 vitamin may cause purple or even black colored nails. Changes in the color of the nails can indicate also kidney, liver, lung and heart diseases. Persons who use frequently nail polish may encounter the problem of yellowish nails.


If you noticed changes in the color of your nails, you should try one of the following treatments. They take just a few minutes and have unexpected results.
1. Whiten your nails using toothpaste, if brushing your nails twice a day.
2. Lemon juice is also a solution. Soak your fingers in it for few minutes and the colored spots on your nails will disappear.
3. Another method is to apply lemon slices directly to your fingers, or just rub your fingers with them. You should do this operation twice a week.
4. A paste made of lemon juice and baking soda will also do miracles to your nails. Apply it on your fingers and then polish your nails.
5. Dissolve denture tablets in water, then soak your fingers in this mixture.
6. Another treatment, a very useful one, is mixing in a bowl one tablespoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide with three tablespoons of baking soda. Rub the mixture on your nails, then wash them with plenty water.


Discolored fingernails provide a lot of information about a person. That’s the reason why doctor pay nails an increasingly attention when doing a routine examination. One of their methods is pinching gently the nail, counting time it takes to the nail to get back to its natural color. So take example and for health problems look right to your nails. Diabetes, psoriasis, heart diseases, dermatitis, kidney, liver or lung disorders – all these can be reflected in the general look, shape and color of the nails. Sometimes, medicines, like tetracycline, may cause changes in the color of the nails. Smoking, malnutrition or ingrown nails have as consequence discolored fingernails.
